Nun

A nun from our partner organization teaching the children to read. With no shoes and one set of clothes, the children often cluster together as the weather can be freezing here in the north.

Traditionally, education was seen as a waste of time as parents could not appreciate the relationship between knowledge and having a better life. For many years, a child's prospects were limited to becoming a shepherd or a helper in town.

With the development of new educational facilities this situation is slowly changing.

Children

The quality of local infrastructure remains a key issue to address. For example, roads composed of soil and clay are often the only connection between rural communities, posing major challenges to the transport of food and resources.

This is especially troublesome in times of rain, which happens frequently, when the villages often find themselves isolated and vulnerable. At such times, villagers will wake up before dawn and walk the swampy roads to get to the main road. There is a limit to how much each person can carry and the challenges are obvious.

Our partner school is run by 3 nuns. These nuns have devoted much of their lives to helping poor children and elderly people. Their strengths have reduced over the years and they are getting older, but their contributions remain a significant impact in the communities where they work. We at Heartroom wish to acknowledge and support their great efforts and to help them continue with their projects. It is not an easy task to teach kids how to read and write, and, at the same time, to travel from one place to another in a challenging environment seeking help and assisting others. Together, our aim is to help the children, the elderly and the poorest achieve a more liveable life. Please help us to help them.
